About The Union League of Philadelphia

The Union League of Philadelphia, ranked the #1 City Club in the Country, is a shining jewel of history in a city defined by such treasure. Founded in 1862 as a patriotic society to support the Union and the policies of President Abraham Lincoln, The Union League of Philadelphia laid the philosophical foundation of other Union Leagues across a nation torn by civil war. The League has hosted US presidents, heads of state, industrialists, entertainers and dignitaries from around the globe and has proudly supported the American military in each conflict since the Civil War. The Union League continues to be driven by its motto, Amor Patriae Ducit or Love of Country Leads.

This place has 4 restaurants, with Trumbauer’s being the latest edition Nov. of 2024. Fun place in a classy casual setting. Food is excellent, and the hamburger is incredible as is Salmon & Pizza. Marty Hammond is the head chef of all restaurants, including the other locations. He trained at the Four Seasons Hotel, under the world class Jean Marie Lacroix. His 1862 Restaurant is 1st class, and this includes the atmosphere and the wonderful staff. The kitchen is open, perhaps why the staff is always so pleasant & happy.

What a truly amazing experience. The history contained in this building rivals that of museums! Being there, especially during 'America 250' made for an amazing and rare treat during my NSBA Board Meeting. Exceptional service. Thoughtfully appointed decor. Fantastic history! It's a place to get lost in. The stories inside those walls have probably written many books.

A fantastic place—it feels like it’s from another planet. The people—the waiters and chefs—are on a completely different level. The setting is magical. The cleanliness is impeccable. The atmosphere is incredibly cozy and beautiful. The coffee is perfectly delicious. The food is fresh and tasty. A pianist plays enchanting classical melodies.

★★★★★ We had an outstanding experience at the Union League on South Street in Philadelphia while attending the National Christian Education Conference. From the moment we arrived, the hospitality was exceptional—staff members were welcoming, attentive, and truly went above and beyond to make our visit comfortable and enjoyable. The facility itself is beautiful, well-maintained, and perfectly suited for hosting conferences and professional gatherings. The meeting spaces were clean, organized, and equipped with everything we needed for a successful event. The atmosphere struck the perfect balance between historic charm and modern convenience. We were especially impressed with the professionalism of the team and the overall excellence in service. Everything—from check-in to meals to event coordination—was handled with care and precision. We are grateful for such a positive experience and would highly recommend the Union League to anyone looking for a top-tier venue in Philadelphia. We look forward to returning in the future!
